Polycarbonate Static Dissipative Sheet Facts and Info

07 Mar News | Comments

Polycarbonates, known by the trademarked names Lexan, Makrolon, and others, are a particular group of thermoplastic polymers. They are easily worked, molded, and thermoformed. Because of these properties, polycarbonates find many applications. Polycarbonates don’t have a unique plastic identification code and are identified as Other, 7.

Polycarbonate is the most impact-resistant clear sheet available today. Virtualty unbreakable, it is approximately 250 times stronger than plate glass and thirty times stronger than acrylic of equivalent thickness. Polycarbonate static dissipative sheet provices lasting protection against vandalism, burglary, and natural occurrences, such as high winds, snow loads, and hailstorms. It is unlikely to snap, shatter, or chip when inundated with thrown objects, such as rocks, bricks and bottles, nor is it likely that this material will break when hammered, garbled, or bent.

Because of its ductility, polycarbonate double glazed can be cured and cold-formed on site from flat sheet into much tighter figures than is possible with acrylic. This provides the freedom to construct curved architectural glazing during installation with out the pre-forming and fabrication costs associated with glass and acrylic.

Polycarbonate Static Dissipative Sheet

Polycarbonate static dissipative sheet is a superior insulating material when compared to equivalent thicknesses of glass. Double-glazing or over-glazing on existing home windows can offer significant energy financial savings. Polycarbonate static dissipative sheet transmits up to 88% of noticeable light-close to that of glass. In applications requiring decreased light transmittance and increased shading, regular polycarbonate sheet is availabte in solar gray and bronze tints. Privateness patterns are also available for elevated visual security.

Polycarbonate derived from BPA is a very durable material. Even though it has high impact-resistance, it has low scratch-resistance and so a hard coating is actually applied to polycarbonate eyewear lenses and polycarbonate outside automotive components. The characteristics of polycarbonate are quite like those of polymethyl methacrylate, but polycarbonate is actually stronger, usable in a wider heat range but more costly. This polymer is highly transparent to visible light and has better light transmission characteristics than many kinds of glass.

Unlike most thermoplastics, polycarbonate static dissipative sheet can undergo large plastic deformations with out cracking or breaking. As a result, it can be processed and created at room temperature using sheet metal techniques, such as developing bends on a brake. Even for sharp angle bends with a tight radius, absolutely no heating is generally necessary. This makes it valuable in prototyping applications where clear or electrically non-conductive parts are needed, which cannot be created from sheet steel.
